New Consumer Survey Shows Many Americans Struggling and Giving Up on Health, Diet and Weight Loss

FORT WASHINGTON, PA. (August 12, 2010) – In spite of facing the deepest recession since the Great Depression and record unemployment rates, many Americans would pass up a work promotion to drop 10 to 20 pounds, according to the new Nutrisystem Diet Index™ issued today by Nutrisystem, Inc.®, a leading provider of weight management programs and services. Americans would also rather give up sex than gain weight, and they’d toss their cell phones and give up watching TV to have a toned tummy, according to the new findings. The Nutrisystem Diet Index™ is a new series of national consumer surveys tracking America’s diet behaviors, attitudes and trends throughout the year. Each survey has a scale that measures America’s current diet and lifestyle behavior and choices.

“The fact of the matter is, America is obsessed with dieting and weight loss, but the majority of Americans aren’t eating healthier or getting thinner,” said Joe Redling, chairman and CEO of Nutrisystem, Inc. “We’ve developed the Nutrisystem Diet Index™ to better understand America’s attitudes toward dieting and to start a dialogue about healthy dieting and healthy lifestyle habits and trends.”

The first Nutrisystem Diet Index™ revealed that Americans place a high value on being healthy, but they abandon the idea of achieving a healthier weight and lifestyle, because they ultimately feel their goals are too difficult to attain and maintain. The American lifestyle is also a factor. Inconveniences of work, giving up favorite foods, not having the time to plan ahead, cooking for a larger family and the cost of healthy foods are cited as some of the biggest barriers.

KEY NUTRISYSTEM DIET INDEX™ FINDINGS

The Nutrisystem Diet Index™ revealed that Americans are clearly showing signs of struggle. According to the Index, Americans are at the midway mark on healthy diet and lifestyle choices, scoring a 5.1 on a ten point scale – with one being an “unhealthy diet and lifestyle” and ten being a “healthy diet and lifestyle” – when asked basic questions about their eating habits, diet behaviors and lifestyle choices.

The Nutrisystem Diet Index™ showed:

Only 35 percent of Americans fall into the “healthy lifestyle” category on the Index, by making healthy food and portion choices and by exercising regularly.

30 percent of Americans fall into the “unhealthy lifestyle” category and have dieted an average of 20 times in their life, using five different diet plans

35 percent of Americans have dieted an average of six times in their life, using two different diet plans

Nearly 1/3 of Americans (29 percent) have tried dieting over the past eleven months, and more than half of Americans (51 percent) have dieted within the past two years

Additionally, nearly a third of Americans confess to being self-conscious about their bodies and the Nutrisystem Diet Index™ reveals insight into Americans’ attitudes about their health, appearance and lifestyle during the height of swimsuit season.

Additional findings from the survey include:

A majority of Americans (66 percent) who say they need to lose weight to feel sexier than they currently do, think it will take an average of 23 pounds of weight loss for this to happen

More than half (52 percent) of American women would take a summer without sex over gaining 10 pounds; a quarter of American men (25 percent) said they would make the same sacrifice

More Americans would prefer to shed 10 to 20 pounds this summer (25 percent) than get promoted at work (20 percent)

Almost three out of four Americans (73 percent) are willing to give up television, their cell phones or their computers for a flat tummy this beach season

Nearly half (46 percent) of the country chose not to diet, even when they knew they needed to lose weight, because they didn’t want to give up their favorite foods

Almost all dieters (93 percent) find at least one aspect of their dieting plan to be challenging; the majority said they aren’t able to control cravings (71 percent) and find portion size an obstacle to their success (64 percent)

“The Nutrisystem Diet Index found that many Americans are willing to make extreme sacrifices to lose weight, but they eventually give up on their goals because they don’t know how to reach them. While there is an endless amount of health information available, there are still misperceptions and confusion about becoming healthier,” said Dr. Bruce Daggy, nutritional biochemist and vice president of research and development, Nutrisystem, Inc. “This research helps shed light on some of the root causes of our nation’s struggle to achieve a healthy diet and lifestyle.”

The Nutrisystem Diet Index™ analyzed healthy diet and lifestyle behaviors and attitudes based on a telephone survey conducted by Kelton Research on behalf of Nutrisystem, Inc. The phone survey took place between April 10 and April 21, 2010 among 1,001 adults age 18 and over.

Weight Loss Leader to Provide the Growing Number of Overweight Hispanics in the U.S. Improved Access to Weight Loss Information

HORSHAM, PA. (May 5, 2010) - Recognizing a need to provide the Hispanic community with improved access to weight loss and nutrition resources, Nutrisystem, Inc. ®, a leading provider of weight management programs and services, recently launched a Spanish language version of Nutrisystem.com. In 2009, the Center for Disease Control reported that more than 27 percent of Hispanics or Latinos in the U.S. were obese, which can often be managed, if not prevented, through healthy lifestyle changes.

“Nutrisystem understands the need for improving the availability of weight loss information to the Spanish-speaking population. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death among the Latino community and we know that losing weight can significantly lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes,” said Joe Redling, Chairman and CEO of Nutrisystem, Inc. “We feel it’s important to allow our customers to obtain information and transact in the language they feel most comfortable with. Now, all of the information on Nutrisystem foods and programs, including Nutrisystem D, for people with type 2 diabetes, is readily available in Spanish on Nutrisystem.com.”

Approximately 90 to 95 percent of Hispanic Americans with diabetes have type 2 diabetes, further illustrating the need for weight management tools and information such as clinically tested Nutrisystem D, which is designed to help the 24 million Americans with type 2 diabetes who want to lose weight.

After Giving Birth to Her Son, Angie Everhart Loses Her Baby Weight and Gets Her Swimsuit Body Back

HORSHAM, PA. (February 23, 2010) - A national personality who graced the covers of top fashion magazines and appeared on both big and small screens, Angie Everhart hit a plateau with her weight when her life changed gears after giving birth to her son Kayden. Everhart, who battled weight gain her entire life, called on Nutrisystem to get her pre-baby body back and regain her confidence by shedding 34 pounds.

Nutrisystem, Inc., a leading provider of weight management products and services, has announced that Everhart has joined the success stories of Marie Osmond and Dan Marino as Nutrisystem’s newest spokesperson, ready to take on a healthier lifestyle and achieve her ideal weight.

“People are sometimes surprised to hear that I’ve battled weight gain my entire life, especially those who know me from my modeling days. In reality, I was thin when I was a model but I still fought against many of the same issues and didn’t live a healthy lifestyle,” said Everhart. “In a short period of time Nutrisystem has changed my life and helped me understand how to live a healthier lifestyle, which is so important as a new mom.”

Added Everhart, “After giving birth to Kayden I knew that I had a lot of weight to lose but I didn’t want to starve myself to get thin. Nutrisystem helped me lose weight the healthy way, by eating right and portioning my meals wisely. The Nutrisystem program is working for me and I have a better understanding of how to treat my body. As a career mom, it also helps that the meals are so convenient and easy to prepare-not to mention great-tasting. While on the Nutrisystem program I can handle the demands of motherhood, and still have energy to work out.”

“We are thrilled to support Angie as she embarks on new career aspirations, motherhood and her goal to lose weight and stay healthy,” said Joe Redling, Chairman and CEO of Nutrisystem. ”While new mothers are often eager to lose their baby weight, and as few as two percent of new moms are able to keep the weight off, it’s important to adopt a healthy, consistent weight-loss plan that incorporates exercise.”

“For some of us, weight gain happens at a rate of a pound or two a year, until we wake up one day and realize there’s a problem. For others, like Angie, there is a life event that leads to sudden weight gain,” said Dr. Bruce Daggy, Vice President, Research & Development for Nutrisystem. “Either way, when you are ready to make a change, you want to find an approach that fits with your lifestyle, that you can stick with, and that you can trust to be good for you. We are pleased that Angie has chosen Nutrisystem, and hope that her example will inspire others to begin their own weight loss journeys.”

The Nutrisystem Women’s program is designed specifically for women who want an easy to follow, convenient and effective weight loss program. The program is based on more than three decades of research and proven experience on the effectiveness of weight loss on a low calorie, portion controlled diet accompanied by exercise. Nutrisystem is strongly based on the Glycemic Index, which measures how quickly carbohydrates are broken down and absorbed by the body.

Dr. Jay Satz, Vice President of Scientific Affairs and Research and Development, to Transition into Senior Scientific Advisor Role

HORSHAM, PA, (February 18, 2010) - Nutrisystem ®, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTRI), a leading provider of weight management products and services, announced today that Bruce P. Daggy, Ph.D., an industry expert in nutritional research and development, will lead the Research and Development Department of Nutrisystem.

In this new position, Daggy will manage all aspects of the Nutrisystem Research and Development team, including new product development, clinical research, and outreach to the medical community. As Nutrisystem continues to advance its research and development platform, Daggy and his team will also be responsible for developing and executing new programs for our current and future customer base.

“It gives me great pleasure to welcome Bruce to the Nutrisystem family and to leverage his impeccable credentials, and knowledge of research and development,” commented Joe Redling, Nutrisystem Chairman and CEO. “We’re confident that Bruce will bring a fresh perspective to upcoming product initiatives here at Nutrisystem and help us maintain our position as a leading innovator in the weight loss industry.”

Dr. Daggy brings over 20 years experience within consumer healthcare and nutritional research and development to Nutrisystem. Most recently, Daggy was Vice President of Weight Control Research and Development at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Consumer Healthcare, where he was chosen as technical lead for the development and launch of the company’s first global weight loss product. Prior to that he was based in Europe, where he served as Vice President of Nutritional Healthcare Research and Development for GSK. His career in the industry started with Procter & Gamble where he worked in healthcare technology and product development.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to bring my experience and perspective to Nutrisystem,” said Daggy. “I have long held the belief that our society places too little emphasis on nutrition and behavioral change to prevent or help manage disease. Nutrisystem is a true weight loss industry leader and pioneer in this approach, thanks in no small measure to the efforts of my distinguished predecessor, Dr. Jay Satz. Nutrisystem’s clients have chosen us as their nutritional weight loss partner, and we have a tremendous responsibility to help them along their journey. We can and do help our clients change their lives for the better.”

Daggy’s academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry from Cornell University and a B.A. in Biology from University of Virginia.

Washington, DC (February 2, 2010) - More than 42 million American women live with or are at risk for heart disease, and obesity is a leading risk factor threatening women’s heart health. WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, and Nutrisystem®, a leading provider of weight management programs and services, have partnered to set a dramatic example by challenging eight inspiring WomenHeart Champions to successfully become Red Dress Ready by February 5 - National Wear Red Day.

Through the partnership, Nutrisystem provided the eight women with complimentary Nutrisystem weight loss programs, including: portion controlled meals, nutritional counseling, weight loss support and education. Additionally, Nutrisystem is taking the lead to provide $100,000 in support consisting of a corporate gift, awareness campaigns and in-kind donations for WomenHeart, the nation’s only patient-centered advocacy organization solely dedicated to promoting women’s heart health, and providing education, advocacy and support to women living with heart disease.

“Heart disease is the leading cause of death in American women, a disease so pervasive that it touches millions of families and yet even a small weight loss can help reduce a women’s risk for heart disease. By partnering with WomenHeart, we have identified these eight special women who serve as an inspiration by overcoming their challenges to lose weight and to live a heart healthier lifestyle. There is no one more deserving to celebrate and wear a beautiful red dress this February than these eight women,” said Joe Redling, Chairman and CEO of Nutrisystem, Inc.

“Obesity is a leading risk factor for heart disease and 61% of American women are overweight or obese. These eight WomenHeart Champions demonstrate that women can take charge of their heart health by managing their weight and reducing their risk for heart disease,” said Lisa M. Tate, CEO of WomenHeart.

WomenHeart Champions are women living with heart disease who are trained at WomenHeart’s annual Science & Leadership Symposium at Mayo Clinic to become community educators, advocates, support network leaders and national spokespersons in the effort to raise awareness about heart disease as the leading cause of death in women. The eight WomenHeart Champions who began the seven-month lifestyle challenge in July 2009 are all women who have struggled with weight loss as part of their quest to take control of their heart health. They each made the commitment to fight obesity and set a positive example for women all over the country. Here are their stories:

Evan McCabe, 53, Santa Barbara, CA - Spending years educating and motivating patients and their families about the importance of lifestyle changes as a Cardiology Registered Nurse and professor, Evan knew that being 40 pounds overweight was not good for her heart, as she states, “I was in my own form of denial until I ended up in the emergency room with severe chest pain from heart disease!” With her weight loss more than 40 pounds to date, Evan has become an even more ardent advocate for women’s heart health.

Natasha Fleishman, 41, Lake Elmo, MN - At just 33 years old, with no prior symptoms, or family history of heart disease, Natasha suddenly experienced cardiac arrest in 2002 at her office. Following her recovery and after regaining her health, several stressful events in her life caused her to gain weight. With her two young sons as her motivation, Natasha is thrilled to now be in charge of her heart health by losing 36 pounds for her “Red Dress” moment.

Eileen Drezcka, 46, Sheboygan, WI - After surviving cancer, Eileen’s strength was tested again when she suffered heart failure. Initially misdiagnosed with pneumonia, Eileen was determined to overcome her heart failure for her wedding day last June. In 22 weeks, she met her goal of losing 21 pounds and is ecstatic to get into her beautiful red dress to help build awareness about heart health.

Denise Sullivan, 49, Old Town, ME - Working in the medical field for years and having lost her father at a young age to heart disease; Denise was very aware of the signs of heart disease. But like so many, she ignored them. She survived her quadruple bypass surgery but battled with weight gain and diabetes for years afterwards. Denise decided it was time to Get Red Dress Ready to learn how to lose weight, eat healthy and save her heart. She is doing just that at a 30 plus pound weight loss to date!

Jana Belzer, 47, Kansas City, MO - Suffering a heart attack on vacation, Jana needed emergency open heart surgery and struggled with recovery from the experience and subsequent weight gain. Today, Jana has lost more than 30 pounds and is proud to be taking back control of her heart health while Getting Red Dress Ready.

Frances Pena, 45, Miami, FL - As a mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, Frances realized she was caring for everyone but herself after her heart attack occurred and found herself gaining weight. Now, Frances has lost 25 pounds for herself, and feels beautiful and healthy again.

Renee Thornton, 47, Hueytown, AL - After open heart surgery and six by-passes, Renee found herself 30 pounds heavier and has struggled with losing the weight. With her husband as her support who is also losing several pounds by default, Renee is eating healthy and excited to have lost 22 pounds to date.

Connie Newlon, 52, Ypsilanti, MI - In an effort to take charge of her heart health, recover from quadruple bypass surgery, and combat her on-going struggle with diabetes, Connie has lost more than 33 pounds. For her, Getting Red Dress Ready signifies “a renewed life and awareness of heart disease.”

“Through these eight remarkable women, WomenHeart and Nutrisystem are providing inspiration to women across the country to overcome their struggles with weight and lead healthy lives,” said Tate. ”For two years, Nutrisystem has helped WomenHeart lay the groundwork to make programs like the Getting Red Dress Ready challenge possible, and we are grateful for their tremendous support.”

The Getting Red Dress Ready challenge focuses on helping women trim away excess body fat; one of the leading heart disease risk factors in women. Nutrisystem has provided meals and nutritional counseling to each participant throughout the entire life-changing journey. Participants can lose weight and live healthier by losing up to 10 pounds a month on the Nutrisystem program. Losing weight places a premium on heart health. The Nutrisystem program is low in fat, cholesterol, saturated fats, and sodium

HORSHAM, PA. (January 14, 2010) - With millions of Americans making it their New Year’s resolution to lose weight and lead a healthier lifestyle, and with the cost of some diet programs rising as high as $10,000 per year[1], Nutrisystem has been credited by two of the nation’s most respected media outlets for helping consumers shed pounds without lightening their wallets.

As part of its reporting on the weight loss category, SmartMoney magazine recognized Nutrisystem for providing consumers with the “best value” when it compared six of the most popular weight loss programs - topping such companies as Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Atkins Diet, South Beach Diet and Medifast for value. Separately, CBS MoneyWatch reported Nutrisystem as the “least expensive” meal delivery program and “worth the money”, and that “for a meal-delivery diet system, Nutrisystem is more economical than Jenny Craig.”“While you cannot place a price tag on good health, at Nutrisystem we have made it our priority to make living a healthy lifestyle more affordable and accessible to our customers with nutritionally balanced meal plans and offering the support to help them succeed” said Joe Redling, Chairman and CEO of Nutrisystem, Inc. “Our customers are tightening their belts because of the results they are seeing from Nutrisystem, not because of the impact that it has on their wallets.”“In addition, based on a recent National Business Research Institute survey of our customers, four out of five say that Nutrisystem is the best value for their money over any other weight loss program they have tried, and that it was the best investment they have made in themselves*” said Chris Terrill, Chief Marketing Officer of Nutrisystem, Inc.

Nutrisystem Program will Debut in Over 600 Sam’s Club Locations

HORSHAM, PA (DEC. 7, 2009) – Nutrisystem, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTRI), a leading provider of weight management programs and services, announced that it expects to expand its retail presence through a new alliance with Sam’s Club. Nutrisystem will offer Sam’s Club members cards for its 35-day Program that will include Nutrisystem’s New Omega Chews, which is an optimum source of Omega-3s and helps support a healthy cardiovascular system, healthy cognitive function, and an overall heart-healthy lifestyle*. The weight loss programs will be available in over 600 Sam’s Clubs across the country, beginning in late December.

“We’re excited about our alliance with Sam’s Club and their 47 million members,” said Will Auchincloss, Senior Vice President of Business Development and International at Nutrisystem. “By combining the proven science of our weight loss program and the benefits of our new Omega Chews, we are offering Sam’s Club members, who want to lose weight, a compelling solution for a healthier lifestyle.”

Sam’s Club members will find the cards for the Nutrisystem 35-day Weight Loss Program with Omega Chews, in the gift card area of their local Sam’s Club store. The program may be purchased through a convenient retail card system that starts with buying a card and then activating it online at nutrisystem.com/startlosing or by calling 1-800-784-5657. Once the card is activated and the order is placed, the customer will receive their Nutrisystem program and food through the Company’s home delivery system so they can start losing weight. The Nutrisystem 35-day Program with Omega Chews consists of 35 days of the Nutrisystem favorites menu, plus Omega Chews, and when purchased at Sam’s Club, will also include shipping, free access to 24/7 weight loss counseling, and free membership to Nutrisystem’s robust online community.

It is estimated that diabetes care costs some $174 billion in healthcare expenditures annually. What’s more, about 80% of people with diabetes (14.3 million) are overweight, and 45% of people with diabetes (8.05 million) diet to lose weight, according to a recent Gallup survey. Being obese or overweight with diabetes impairs glucose tolerance, increases insulin resistance and enlarges fat cells, which, in turn, makes diabetes more severe.

The new NutriSystem D program is based on more than three decades of scientific research and proven experience on effective weight loss with exercise. NutriSystem D is based on a low Glycemic Index diet that integrates good carbohydrates into its meal plan. It’s also low in fat and high in fiber. The Glycemic Index measures how quickly food is broken down and absorbed by the body, which impacts blood sugar, a vital factor for people managing their diabetes. The unique combination of NutriSystem D helps support stable blood sugars and keeps you feeling fuller longer between meals. A recent clinical study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed that for patients with Type 2 diabetes, 6-month treatment with a low-Glycemic Index diet resulted in moderately lower HbA(1c) levels compared with a high-cereal fiber diet.

New Nutrisystem D is based on a structured 28-Day meal plan that is completely customizable. The program features more than 140 gourmet-style selections that emphasize healthful whole grains, as well as low fat and low sodium dishes. NutriSystem D menu items are designed to be heart healthy with zero trans fat and low sodium. Customers can supplement their NutriSystem entrées with grocery-items like fresh fruit, vegetables, salads and low-fat dairy to complete their meals.

NutriSystem D meals are shipped free of charge to customers that are enrolled in our auto delivery program. The structured meal program does not require members visit centers to weigh-in or count carbs, calories or points.

“People with diabetes have to perform mental gymnastics when they attempt to lose weight– balancing macronutrients like carbohydrates and protein, with overall calories, all while keeping their blood sugar in check. The complexity causes many people to give up due to frustration,” explains Dr. Gary Foster, Director of the Center for Obesity Research and Education of the Temple University School of Medicine, and the principal investigator of the clinical study. “A structured plan makes the tough work of weight loss easier, it provides a jump start to help motivate patients.”

Nine New Great Tasting Entrees to Choose From Including Meatball Parmesan and Ham and Cheese Omelets

Horsham, PA (August 19, 2009) - Nutrisystem, Inc. (NASDQ: NTRI), a leading provider of weight management products and services that are delivered directly to the customers’ doors, announced today that its popular 28-Day Nutrisystem Select program now includes an additional week of delicious fresh frozen entrees - all for the same low monthly cost. The program combines a full two weeks of gourmet style fresh-frozen meals, including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, with two weeks of Nutrisystem’s classic ready-to-go foods. Previously, the Select program included only one week of fresh-frozen foods. The new Select 28-Day program is an even better value to customers because it offers more of what customers really want and maintains an affordable per-meal cost of about three dollars.

“Our data clearly shows that ‘value’ matters to consumers now more than ever. That’s why an extra week of our premium frozen food, for the same great price makes this such a popular program”, said Joe Redling, CEO and Chairman of Nutrisystem.”

In a twelve-day taste test of foods from four popular diet companies recently reported in The Wall Street Journal, Nutrisystem Select fresh-frozen meals received the highest taste accolades. Reporter Peter King remarked, “Our Nutrisystem Select meal of turkey medallions with broccoli, carrots and cauliflower…was the best meal in our 12-day diet-food odyssey; the turkey was moist and tasty, and the vegetables were flavorful and vibrant with color.”

With up to 170 meal choices, Nutrisystem makes it easier than ever for consumers to stick to their weight loss plan and save money while still indulging in foods that taste great including Shrimp Alfredo, Ravioli Formaggio and sweet frozen treats like ice cream sandwiches and fudge swirl bars.

“At Nutrisystem, we always strive to raise the bar on taste and value,” said Chris Terrill, Nutrisystem’s Executive VP Ecommerce and Chief Marketing Officer. “We recognize how important gourmet-style food is to a successful weight loss journey and are pleased that our customers now have a way to get more of these popular entrees without an increase in our monthly cost.”

Nutrisystem weight loss programs are based on over 35 years of science and nutritional research and are the first prepared diet programs that totally integrate low-Glycemic Index carbohydrates into meal plans that are also low in fat, high in protein and fiber to help you feel full longer. They also contain fiber and omega-3s to help promote heart health.

Nutrisystem customers receive free 24/7 phone counseling with weight loss coaches, as well as free access to its online Mindset Makeover, and membership to its robust online community of over four million people sharing weight loss success stories and tips. The Nutrisystem website, which was rated #1 in the Food and Drug category by Internet Retailer Magazine in 2009, provides free access to a host of proprietary online tools, including menu planners and meal customization to make it easy for customers to
track their progress and try new delicious entrées every day or enjoy their favorites.
